CAT vs XAT vs CMAT: Which MBA Entrance Exam Should You Take?
If you are planning an MBA in India, you will meet three popular exam names: CAT, XAT and CMAT. Here is how they differ.
CAT (Common Admission Test) is conducted by the IIMs and is the most widely accepted MBA exam. It has three sections - Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension, Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Ability - and is known for its high competition.
XAT (Xavier Aptitude Test) is conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur and accepted by XLRI and many other private B-schools. It includes a Decision Making section that is unique to XAT.
CMAT is a national-level test used by many AICTE-approved management institutes. It is generally considered less competitive than CAT, which makes it a useful additional option.
How to decide
- Aiming for IIMs, FMS or MDI: prepare seriously for CAT.
- Targeting XLRI and XAMI institutes: add XAT to your plan.
- Want more college options with a balanced attempt: include CMAT.
Most serious aspirants write more than one exam since the syllabus overlaps substantially in quant, verbal and logical reasoning. After the written test, shortlisted candidates face Group Discussion, Writing Ability Test and Personal Interview rounds, where your academic record, work experience and communication matter.
