Education costs can be a worry, but many scholarships exist for Indian students at every level. Knowing where to look is half the job.

Government scholarships
- National Scholarship Portal (NSP): a single portal where students can apply for many central and state schemes, including post-matric and merit-based scholarships.
- Central sector and category-based schemes for SC, ST, OBC, minority and differently-abled students.
- INSPIRE and similar schemes for students pursuing science education.

State government schemes
Most states run their own scholarship and fee-waiver programmes for local students. Check your state education or social welfare department website.

Institute and private scholarships
Many universities offer merit scholarships based on entrance scores, board marks or sports and cultural achievements. Corporate foundations and trusts also offer scholarships for specific courses.

How to apply
1. Collect documents early: marksheets, income certificate, category certificate, bank passbook, Aadhaar and admission proof.
2. Register on the scholarship portal and complete the profile.
3. Apply before the deadline and keep a copy of the acknowledgement.
4. Track the application and respond if any correction is requested by the institute or verification office.

Be careful
Never pay anyone to "guarantee" a scholarship. Genuine government applications are free. Eligibility criteria, income limits and dates change every year, so always confirm on the official website.
