Every year lakhs of students prepare for engineering entrances, and the first confusion is almost always the same: do I need JEE Main, JEE Advanced, or both?

JEE Main is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Its score is used for admission to NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded technical institutes, and many state and private colleges also accept it. It is also the qualifying round for JEE Advanced.

JEE Advanced is the exam for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology. Only candidates who qualify JEE Main within the cut-off for that year can appear. It is organised by one of the IITs on a rotational basis and tests deeper conceptual understanding.

Which should you target?
- If your goal is an IIT, you need to qualify JEE Main first and then clear JEE Advanced.
- If you are happy with NITs, IIITs or good state and private colleges, JEE Main alone is enough.
- Many students keep BITSAT, VITEEE and state exams as backup options.

How to plan your preparation
1. Build a strong base in NCERT for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
2. Practise previous years' papers to understand question patterns.
3. Take regular mock tests and analyse every mistake.
4. Revise formulas and reaction summaries every week.

Counselling for both exams is conducted through JoSAA, where seats are allotted on the basis of rank, category and your choice list. Exam dates, eligibility and number of attempts change from year to year, so always read the latest official brochure before applying.
